Garwood Board of Education Appoints New Superintendent - June 20, 2025 Press Release

June 20, 2025

Dear Garwood School Community:

The Garwood Board of Education is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Jason Marx as its new Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2025.

Dr. Marx is a highly skilled educator and a respected leader in education known for his professionalism, expertise, and unwavering commitment to supporting students, staff, and administrators. His ability to address complex challenges with both knowledge and compassion has had a profound positive impact on the school communities in which he has served.

With a robust career spanning 12 years of classroom experience followed by 12 years of administrative experience, most recently as Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services in Butler, he has honed his skills as a district leader focused on improving teaching and learning outcomes.

Dr. Marx’s leadership style is one that feels most aligned with the values of our school community — he takes a measured approach, is child-centered and action-oriented, and effectively unites people to collaborate on behalf of the students they serve. His commitment to fostering a supportive environment has led school staff to feel valued and motivated, contributing to the overall success of all students, a key consideration when choosing our next superintendent.

When the Board of Education began the process of hiring a new superintendent, a holistic approach was taken to ensure every potential pathway for a replacement was considered.

The possibility of a shared service with Clark was explored; however, Clark was not in a position to engage in such a partnership at that time. Discussions also included the potential to regionalize with another district in the future. In the short term, no viable solution emerged, leading to the decision to begin the search for an interim superintendent by creating a hiring committee to spearhead the process.

To inform the search, the committee requested the Garwood Educational Association (GEA) develop a survey and collect feedback aimed at helping the Board understand the qualities important to them for the next leader. After reviewing the comprehensive feedback provided, the hiring committee met with a multidisciplinary group put forward by the GEA, which offered additional insights into key considerations for the interview process. Board leadership then met with Principal Mrs. Emmons to gain her perspective on the type of candidate who would be a solid fit for the district and its staff.

All of these insights significantly influenced the decisions made during the interview process. The hiring committee was fortunate to meet several outstanding candidates and ultimately identified Dr. Marx as an exemplary fit for the Garwood Public School District, distinguished by his strong character, robust experience, and effective leadership style. Excitement grew upon learning that he was interested in a longer-term commitment, agreeing to join as the full-time superintendent rather than in an interim capacity.

The Board looks forward to supporting him as this next chapter begins and believes he will be an excellent addition to lead the top-notch staff and advance the district.

Dr. Marx looks forward to engaging with the community as soon as he starts.

Have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,

April Farrell
