Mrs. Hak's Volcano Project

After reading a story about mountains and volcanos, the students in Mrs. Hak's 3rd grade LAL decided to bring the story to life. As a group, they constructed a town that included houses, trees, plants and even an ocean. The ocean had surfers, swimmers, sharks, fish and even a pirate ship. In the center of the town, the students made a volcano out of clay. With safety goggles ready, the students "erupted" the volcano using baking soda, vinegar and red food coloring! Thankfully, the swimmers and surfers were all safe!

"Mrs. Florio's Second Grade Explores Earth Materials Using the Foss Science Program In the third marking period Mrs. Florio's second grade students have been exploring earth materials through the new Foss Science Module "Pebbles, Sand, and Silt." This "hands on" science program has enabled students to become junior geologists. Students have observed volcanic rocks such as basalt, tuff, and scoria using hand lenses and loupes, and sorted river rocks by size, color, shape, and texture. They have also observed how sand and silt separate when water is added to the mixture and allowed to settle overnight. Future experiments and observations will incluce making bricks out of soil and twigs, and creating sand sculptures by mixing sand with a cornstarch matix. Students keep a Science Journal containing their observations through drawings and short narratives."

Mr. Schneekcloth's Ancient Rome Wall

"With the help of a grant from the Garwood PTA, Mr. Schneekloth and his LAL students were finally able to complete 'The Wall,' an ambitious project started more than a year ago. The top segment of the wall features the major constellations and each planet in the solar system and the bottom half displays over 70 useful Latin words (each student painted one). The wall ties into an exciting mythology unit that includes a glimpse into the culture of Ancient Rome."

We presented our annual Fine Arts Festival on May 24th throughout Lincoln school. The classes of Mrs. Patricia Novy exhibited 416 pieces of art created by students in grades one through eight. Two special displays included art which represented our school at the Union County Education Association Legislative Dinner. Four pieces of art from Garwood were on display with other pieces representing the students of Union County. The other display included three pieces that represented Garwood at the Union County Teen Arts Festival held at IKEA. Jaclyn Weisser's painting was selected to represent the county at the Teen Art Festival at the state house in Trenton.
